1346486 Photo-electric analysis CLIFFORD INSTRUMENTS Inc 19 April 1971 [9 April 1970 18 Jan 1971] 26499/71 Heading G1A A recording densitometer comprises means mounted for scanning a sample responsive to energy from the sample, means for traversing a recording chart synchronously with the sample scanning and for producing an analogue record trace, means for integrating the area under the trace, during the whole traverse means for marking manually areas of interest on the recording means for rescanning the sample and for dividing the signals obtained by the integrated value of the previous whole trace, means for responding to the detection of the marks to integrate over desired areas the said divided value, and means for printing digitally on the chart in the predetermined areas the values of the integrated divided values, "area per cent" values and such values multiplied by an inset "quantity of material" value. The size and route of traverse may be adjustable and values may be stored and fed into the circuitry for calibration purposes. The process may be automatically controlled and the energy may be light including U. V. or infrared, transmitted through, or reflected by, the sample, or, may be radiation from the sample due to fluorescence or tagging. Biological applications e.g. zone electro-phoresis including blood analysis are referred to The sample may be an electro-phoresis strip secured magnetically to the apparatus. Integration is achieved by producing pulses having a recurrence frequency proportional to the detector voltage and storing them, e.g. in a counter. The signal may be mathematically treated to indicate directly the value being measured, logarithmic conversion and inversion being exemplified. Clock pulses are used both for control and for driving, the traversing motor, separate motors being provided for sample scanning and recording, the limits of scanning being determined by up-down counters and limit switches.
