Abstract

1324326 Seals AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO Ltd 6 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 9460/71 Heading F2B In a ball-and-socket joint comprising a flexible sealing boot 12 having, at one end, a bead 15 which engages and is clamped in a peripheral groove 14 in the socket 10 by a resiliently extensible clamping band 17, the width X of the part of the bead engaging the groove 14 is less than the width Y of the groove and the depth of the groove 16 in the bead and the stiffness of the bead material are so related to the tension exerted by the band 17 that pressure inside the boot sufficient to expand the band can release grease between the bead and socket without displacing the boot and pulling it from underneath the band. Preferably, the difference between dimensions X and Y is not less than 0À010 inch and the band 17, in its fitted condition, is not extended by more than 7% of its free circumferential dimension. The other end of the boot is clamped to the pin 11 by a band 13.
