Abstract
1323831 Gas mixture liquefaction and separation process; refrigeration J F PRITCHARD & CO 19 April 1971 [14 Jan 1971] 25213/71 Headings F4H and F4P Cooling or liquefaction of a dry compressed gas stream 70, Fig. 1a, e.g. natural gas, is effected by passage through a single path 74a, 74b, 74c of an indirect heat exchanger 30 traversed by a single mixed refrigerant stream in a closed circuit comprising a compressor 18, after cooler-condenser 20 and expansion valve 46; the refrigerant stream having components of successively lower boiling points e.g. C5 to C1 hydrocarbons, the boiling point of one of which is below the liquefaction temperature of the feed mixture at the prevailing pressure, the boiling point of another component being sufficiently high to permit condensation in the aftercooler 20 and the freezing points of all the refrigerant components being below the feed liquefaction temperature. In operation the condensate formed at 20 is separated in a drum 24 and the resulting gas and and liquid streams 32, 34 are combined at 28, warmed in a path 42 of exchanger 30 before being expanded at 46 and returned at 48 through exchanger 30 and recycled to compressor 18. The feed gas mixture having been partly condensed in heat exchanger path 74a is withdrawn and fed to a fractionator 78 the overhead from which is returned at 80 to exchanger path 74b for further cooling and partial liquefaction. The feed stream is withdrawn at 82 and the condensate is separated at 84 and used as reflux for fractionator 78 whilst the gaseous feed stream is further cooled and fully liquefied in exchanger path 74c before being expanded at a valve 142 to storage pressure. The liquid bottoms from fractionator 78 are fed to a debutanizer column 106 from which product liquid butane is withdrawn through a line 132 and gaseous overheads from column 106 are condensed at 112, a portion thereof is used as reflux for column 106 and the remainder is passed through a line 120 and is liquefied in an exchanger 92 cooled by boil-off gas from the product L.N.G. storage container 146.
