Abstract
1323641 Making tubing by fluid inflation; stamping OLIN CORP 10 May 1971 [13 May 1970] 14052/71 Headings B3A and B3Q Apparatus for inflating a passageway in metal strip 1 includes a coil supply 10, severing means e.g. shears 40 spaced between pinching means 30 and inflating means 20, so that after each length of strip has been inflated and severed, the strip at the end of the supply has an open passageway for insertion in the inflation means. The strip 1 comprises superimposed strips (3), (4), Fig. 1A (not shown), pressure welded together with a stop-weld pattern between them to allow the formation of one or more longitudinal passages. The strip is fed by the pinching means 30 and only the first strip length from the supply 10 requires the ends of the passageways pried open prior to inflation. The means 20 comprises a clamping device 22 and a number of inflation needles 21, which are supplied with compressed air by a pump 26. Alternatively, the end of the strip 1 may be held by plates 50, 51, Fig. 3, to which are fitted 0-rings 52, 53. The rings partially close the ends of the tubes and form a pressure cavity for fluid under pressure. The rolls of the pinching means 30 may be replaced by clamping blocks (60), in which case alternative strip feed means is provided, Fig. 6 (not shown). Where the strip contains only a single tube, its edge portions may be formed into fins, prior to inflation, by slitting and bending operations which take place between the shears- 40 and the inflation means 20. Inflation may take place as the strip is fed from the supply 10, in which case the inflation means is mounted on a carriage movable along fixed rails.
