Abstract

1323196 Ultrasonic agitation of liquids K G LUKE ENG PTY Ltd 26 April 1971 [27 April 1970] 11297/71 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions H2 and H4] The horn 21 (Figs. 5, 6) of a piezoelectric or electrostrictive type transducer progressively increases in diameter from the drive element end 23 towards the other end 24 to provide a peripheral surface of revolution 26 all points on which lie on or outside the diameter of the drive element 17 and which in axial crosssection of the horn 21 is curved. The curvature may be outwardly concave or convex and hyperbolic or exponential. Preferably a right circular cylindrical end portion 27 is provided, the junction 28 being sharply defined. As described, two piezoelectric ceramic wafers 17 are disposed to either side of a plate 18 and are sandwiched between a steel body 19 and an aluminium alloy horn 21. A compressive stress is applied to the wafers 17 by a cap screw 22. The device may be bonded to the underside of a tank for imparting ultrasonic energy to a fluid, e.g. for ultrasonic cleaning, homogenization or disintegration of bacterial cultures. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 957,802.
