Abstract

1323100 Purifying vitreous carbon LE CARBONE-LORRAINE 4 Aug 1970 [5 Aug 1969] 37688/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division G2] An apparatus for spectrographic analysis comprises a hollow body constituting a container and heater for the substance to be analysed and providing a zone in which the atomic absorption. takes place, and this hollow body is made of vitreous carbon. Preferably this hollow body is a tube, and has a uniform cross-section at least along part of its length. The tube may be provided with one or more lateral orifices, one or more of which orifices may be provided with nozzles of vitreous carbon. Before use, the hollow body may be subjected to a temperature of 2500‹ to 3000‹ C. and this treatment may be carried out in the presence of a halogen. The body may be given a coating of a refractory and incombustible material on its external surface. During the operation of the apparatus, the body may be heated by resistance heating, by induction, or by the carrier gas for the substance to be analysed.
