Abstract
1322866 Friction materials BBA GROUP Ltd 29 Nov 1971 55315/71 Addition to 1287817 Heading C4X [Also in Division C3] A friction material, e.g. for brakes, in one apsect (1) comprises nickel sulphide formed in situ from finely divided nickel and antimony sulphide, and at least one filler and/or friction modifier, In another aspect (2) the material comprises nickel and antimony sulphide which may or may not have been wholly or partially converted under heat to nickel sulphide, plus a thermosetting resin. Suitable fillers and friction modifiers, which are also optional in (2), are metals, e.g. brass, non-metallic fillers, e.g. CaCO 3 or rottenstone, abrasive friction modifiers, e.g. Al 2 O 3 and/or carborundum, and lubricative friction modifiers, e.g. graphite or barytes. Asbestos or other fibrous reinforcing material may also be included in (1) or (2). The resin may be a phenol-formaldehyde or borated phenolic resin. Suitable amounts for embodiment (1) are 15-85% by wt. nickel, 5-65% antimony sulphide, 5-45% filler and/or friction modifier and 5-50% asbestos. For (2), 2-24% thermosetting resin may be used with 3-30% nickel, 2-20% antimony sulphide, 5-60% asbestos, and/or 5-50% filler. To form material (1) the mixed ingredients are compressed and heated to 325‹ C. at least, usually about 600‹ C. To form material (2) the mixture is compressed and heated to cure the resin; if temperatures above 325‹ C. are used nickel sulphide begins to form. Preferably curing is effected in two stages, the first under compression at e.g. 120-180‹ C., and the second without compression at e.g. 90-300‹ C. In Example 1 a mixture of 45% by wt. Ni, 30% Sb sulphide, 20% asbestos, 5% barytes is compressed and then heated to 600‹ C., formin nickel sulphide. In Example 2 a mixture of 20% Ni, 15% Sb sulphide, 15% phenolic resin, 45% asbestos, 5% graphite is heated under compression to 150‹ C. and then heated in an oven to 200‹ C., the resulting material containing uncombined Ni and Sb sulphide bound by resin. In Example 3 the Ex. 2 mixture was heated under compression from 200‹ to 400‹ C., causing almost complete conversion to Ni sulphide and partial carbonization.
