Abstract

1287817 Friction materials BBA GROUP Ltd 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970 30 April 1970] 17965/70 and 46434/70 Heading C3R [Also in Division C4] A friction material, e.g. for brakes, comprises a thermosetting resin and at least two other materials which combine under the frictional heat produced, e.g. on braking, to provide additional binding within the material. Nickel and sulphur are preferred materials. Preferred friction compositions contain 10-50 p.b.w. asbestos, 5-30 p.b.w. thermosetting resin, e.g. a phenol-formaldehyde or borated phenolic resin, 2-30 p.b.w. nickel and 2-15 p.b.w. sulphur. The composition may also contain a filler, e.g. brass powder, CaCO 3 or rottenstone, and a friction modifier, e.g. Al 2 O 3 , carborundum, graphite or barytes. The friction material may be made by compressing the composition and heating the compact to cure the resin, e.g. at 120-180‹ C. The finished product contains negligible nickel sulphide. In a modification, the compact may be cured at 250-300‹ C., when the nickel and sulphur will be wholly or substantially converted to nickel sulphide, and no further reaction will take place in the friction material in use.
