Abstract

1322836 Thermal relays E B KHEIFITS B Z VAINSHTEIN G K POCHKHUA Z G KHANIASHVILI and B D TORTLADZE 4 Aug 1971 36611/71 Heading H1N A thermal relay for protection against overcurrent and phase failure in a polyphase system comprises a plurality of bimetals 3 sensing the respective phase currents and acting upon a shaft 1 capable of movement both axially and rotatably and coupled to a contact arrangement through a connection 5, 6 which transmits only the rotary motion. The shaft 1 has a square section which slides freely in a square bore in a sleeve 6 whch is rotatable in a bearing 5. An arm 7 attached to sleeve 6 carries a latch 13 normaly holding the contacts closed. Offset from the axis of shaft 1 is a notched portion 2 co-operating through cam surfaces 12 with the bimetals 3. On heating due to normal phase currents the bimetals move the portion 2 towards a stop formed by a compensating bimetal 11, the square section sliding through the sleeve 6. Subsequent movement of the bimetals either due to overload current or phase failure causes rotation of shaft 1 due to the bimetals acting on the sloping surfaces 12, thus releasing the latch 13 to open the contacts 9, 10. A push button 14 is provided for resetting.
