Abstract

1322744 Spring drum apparatus; counterbalancing; winches OVERHEAD DOOR CORP 5 Oct 1970 47218/70 Heading B8B [Also in Division E2] A pair of cable drums 6, 6<SP>1</SP> for counterbalance cables 10, 10<SP>1</SP> of a liftable door have a counterbalancing torque applied thereto by a torsion spring 25, a lost motion rotatable coupling 21, 22 for each drum delaying any accumulation of slack cable should the load in either cable be relieved. Each drum is independently loaded by a spring 34 in the cable wind up direction to tension any slack cable, within the limits of the couplings 22, 21. The torsion spring 25 has one end secured to the door surround structure 29 and the other end adjustably locked to a shaft 1 to facilitate setting the initial spring tension. The drums are freely rotatably mounted on the shaft 1 and each has an arcuate projection 22 engageable with an arcuate projection 21 of a sleeve 19 locked to the shaft 1 to facilitate drum drive, an arcuate gap between the two projections permitting the lost motion in the drive. In a further embodiment, the drums are rigidly secured to the shaft and the lost motion coupling is formed within the shaft. In other embodiments the counterbalancing torque is provided by weights or drive motors.
