1322265 Alkylation of polyhydroxybenzophenones AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 20 July 1971 [25 Aug 1970] 34052/71 Addition to 1194320 Heading C2C Polyhydroxybenzophenones having the general formula where R is hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, carboxy, carbalkoxy or hydroxy and R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, carboxy, carbalkoxy or hydroxy, provided that both R 1 and R 2 are simultaneously a hydroxy group, is alkylated to form a product of the formula where R 3 is alkyl, by forming a reaction mixture of the starting material (I), an alkyl halide of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and acid acceptor and as solvent a (C 1 -C 6 ) alkyl ether of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol and refluxing this mixture to effect alkylation.
