1322256 Corrugating wire ANACONDA WIRE & CABLE CO 19 Aug 1970 39926/70 Heading B3E Apparatus for paying corrugated wires 36 to a cable insulation extruder 44 comprises means 12 for guiding a plurality of straight wires 11 to a pair of intermeshing corrugating rolls 13, 14, at least one tensioning roll 24 for the corrugated wires, directing means 39 for distributing said wires about a cable 41 adjacent to said extruder, the tensioning roll 24 having a plurality of circumferential slots (26, Fig. 2, not shown) fitting said corrugated wires and guiding them with the planes of the corrugations radial to the tensioning roll which is mounted in a position varying in response to the tension in the wires, and wherein means 33 are provided responsive to the position of the tensioning roll for varying the speed at which said corrugating rolls are driven. The rolls 13, 14 are mounted in a roll stand 17 on a table 18 and are driven by a motor and gear reducer 19 through a belt drive 23. A pair of tensioning rolls 24, 25 are mounted on an arm 27 mounted on the shaft of a mechanical multiplier (31) (Fig. 2, not shown) coupled to a potentiometer 33 which controls the speed of the motor 19. The roll 25 can be replaced by a non-rotating restraining member. On leaving the corrugating rolls the wires pass through guide tubes 37 and fall in a free catenary curve 38 to a slotted plate 39 that serves as the directing means. Photo electric cells may be used instead of the potentiometer for controlling the speed of motor 19.
