Abstract

1322241 Extensible boom for spacecraft BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 20 Aug 1971 [19 Sept 1970] 44746/70 Heading B7W [Also in Divisions F2 and H1] An extensible boom assembly for mounting on a spacecraft includes at least two rigid tubular members 5, 8, 10 a first one of which 5 is pivotally connected at one of its ends to a mounting member for example a bracket 1, and is connected at its other end to one end of a second tubular member 8, to the free end of which may be pivotally connected one end of a third tubular member 10, and coil spring means 7, 9 for connecting together the adjacent ends of the tubular members, which spring means tends to adopt a straight condition and cause the tubular members to lie in a colinear relationship, whereby the tubular members may be folded to lie against each other and may be automatically unfolded to form a substantially rigid boom extending from the mounting member. The outer tubular member carries a scientific instrument 17, for example a solar cell or aerial, connected to a spacecraft to which the bracket is fixed by a central core of stainless steel wire tensioned by a spring within the spacecraft and an electrical conductor loosely wound round the wire. Adjacent ends of the tubular members are formed as a plug 11 or 13 and socket 12 or 14 and an elastic cord 19 holds the tubular members close to the spacecraft against the force of the springs 7, 9 and a spring 20 wound around a pivotal support of the bracket and the first tubular member 5. The cord is released to deploy the boom, the springs causing the tubular members to adopt a colinear relationship. The orientation of the members may be set by the plugs and sockets. In a spinning spacecraft, spring 20 is dispensed with.
