Abstract

1322186 Boom for artificial satellite BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 5 Oct 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 54389/70 Heading B7W [Also in Divisions E2 and F2] An extendable strut assembly comprises a rigid strut member 5 pivotally connected to another rigid strut member 10 for movement between a folded position, Fig. 1, and a generally coaxial extended position, Fig. 5 (not shown), with a spring biasing the struts towards the extended position, there being means for locking the members in the extended position. The connected ends of the members are formed as lugs 8, 9 pivotable on a shaft 11, one having a pair of upstanding keys (13), (14), Fig. 2 (not shown), and the other a complementary pair of keyways (16), (17), Fig. 3 (not shown). To deploy the assembly, elastic retaining cord 30 is released, and coil springs 20, 21 urge the member 10 to rotate and urge the lugs together. Following engagement of the keys in the keyways, spring-loaded plungers 26, Fig. 4, held in holes 29 in the shaft 11 are released to lock the lugs together. The keys and the surface surrounding the keyways may be covered with layers 18, 19 of an anti-friction material such as PTFE. To allow a greater angle of rotation, two keys (36), (37), Fig. 7 (not shown), of different sizes may be provided together with two matching keyways (39), (40). Strut member 5 may be pivotally mounted on a spacecraft 4, and the member 10 may carry at its other end an experimental device 31, solar cells or aerial; alternatively the assembly may comprise more than two strut members.
