Abstract
1322044 Speculum BIO-ANALYTICAL LABORATORIES Inc 20 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 55228/70 Heading A5R A speculum for use mainly as a sigmoidoscope comprises a barrel 11, tapered so that the diameter of the distal end opening 13 is smaller than that of the proximal end opening 14, with, positioned at the proximal end, a sleeve 17 having a radial flange 19, which acts as a window for lamps 25 situated in a recess 27 of a lighting head 24 which forms part of a detachable handle unit 12. The barrel 11 has an end shield 16 which has an annular shoulder 20 whose inner rim abuts the outer edge of the flange 19. The lighting head 24 is annular and supports a sealing gasket 36 to give an airtight joint between the barrel and handle. An end cap 32, containing a lens 33 is removably attached to the lighting head 24 and is sealed to the lighting head 24 by a ring gasket 38. Positive or negative pressure may be applied by means of conduit 34 to the interior of the barrel. Light transmission to the distal end of the barrel 11 is increased by use of focusing reflectors 28. The lamps are powered by a battery 30 which is connected to a switch 31 which allows any number of lamps to be utilized. An obturator assembly for use with the speculum comprises a smooth ovate tip 21, whose diameter is approximately that of the distal end opening, and a stem 22. The diameter of the sleeve 17 is wider than the diameter of the tip 21 to allow complete removal of the obturator after use. The barrel may have an internal taper and also both an internal and external taper Figure 6 (not shown). The barrel 11 and sleeve unit 17 are made of a synthetic resin material. An automatic ejection mechanism Figure 7 (not shown) for removing the barrel and sleeve unit from the handle may be provided. The end shield has a portion (44) which projects into the lighting head (41) and is engaged by a series of spring biased balls (47) in the lighting head (41). Two pivoted angle members (48) and (49) each having one arm (52) and (53) resting against the projecting portion (44) and the other projecting outwardly from the lighting head eject the barrel when a depressing force is applied to the projecting arms. The handle unit 12 may be used in other medical instruments such as opthalnaoscopes and otoscopes.
