Abstract

1,264,725. Otoscope. WELCH ALLYN Inc. 12 Aug., 1970. [7 Oct., 1969], No. 38890/70. Heading ASR. An otoscope comprises a speculum 22 and a hollow head 21, the rear of which is closed by a removable lens 36 having a resilient non- metal frame 37 whereby the frame also acts as a gasket to provide an airtight closure. In use the speculum is sheathed in a detachable hollow tip 30 that is attached by means of a log and slot 31. The head 21 is connected to a handle 16 via a lug 24 and a tubular throat piece 25. The handle contains a lamp 19, batteries, a switch 17 and a rheostat dial 18. A bundle of clad light transmitting fibres 28 pass from the lamp to the end of the speculum at 27. The lens 36 and frame 37 slide within the opening 32 of the head. The frame comprises a low friction elastomer and effects an airtight seal. If the lens and frame are removed surgical instruments may be inserted into the auditory canal. In one embodiment of the invention an inflation bulb (40) and tube (41) may be attached to inlet 44 to enable the tinpanum to be activated.
