1321923 Diamond synthesis apparatus UKRAINSKY ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY KONSTRUKTORSKO-TEKHNOLOGICHESKY INSTITUT SINTETICHESKIKH SVERKHTVERDYKH MATERIALOV I INSTRUMENTA GOSPLANA UKRAINSKOI SSR 7 May 1971 [12 May 1970] 13625/71 Heading B1X [Also in Divisions B5 and C1] High pressure apparatus for use in the synthesis of diamond and other super-hard materials comprises a pair of dies I which are movable towards one another under pressure, each die having in its working face a cavity having the shape of a surface of revolution and, in cross-section including the axis, having a radius of curvature which decreases from the edges of the cavity (where it may be infinite) to the centre of the cavity. As shown the cavity is conical near its edge and part spherical at its centre. In use, the reaction mixture 3 is placed in a container 2 of lithographic stone which is arranged in the cavities of the dies and which deforms under pressure as shown. The dies are preferably reinforced by steel binding rings 4, and one at least is insulated to enable the mixture to be heated electrically through the dies.
