Abstract

1321742 Glass laminates GLAVERBEL 24 May 1971 [25 May 1970] 16580/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division C1] A method of making a panel incorporating two sheets of glass which are assembled in facing relationship and each of which is optically anisotropic in at least one zone thereof comprises securing said sheets in facing relationship with the sheets positioned and oriented relative to each other so that there is within the area of the panel at least one zone in which both sheets exhibit anisotropy in respect of at least one common optical property but in different ways such that if for each of the sheets, the differences in the magnitudes of the or a said property from one direction to another around a point located within the sheet in that zone are represented by a set of notional vectors of appropriately different lengths radiating from said point (the points in the different sheets being directly opposite each other in the panel) the geometric figures plotted by the ends of the respective sets of vectors in a common plane containing those points, or in at least one pair of parallel planes each contain one of those points, are in mutually different orientations about said points as viewed normally to such plane or planes. In a preferred embodiment, two sheets of glass are cut from a glass blank exhibiting optical anisotropy which is substantially uniform over the area of the blank and are brought into and secured together in positions in which they are so relatively angularly oriented about their central axes intersecting the opposed surfaces of the sheets that the notional lines on the assembled sheets along which they are intersected by any plane bisecting the panel are lines which are not parallel in said blank. One or both of the sheets may be toughened by ion diffusion; advantageously at least one of the sheets may have a thin layer e.g. of varnish, paint, enamel, SnO 2 or a metal or an optical layer based on gold or other precious metal or titanium or bismuth oxide. In a preferred embodiment, the sheets are secured together by an intervening bonding agent or an organic sheet e.g. of polyvinyl butyral; alternatively, the glass sheets may be held in spaced relationship by a frame e.g. of a plastics material such as a polyester or of metal or by means of interpolated material at the margins of the sheet.
