Abstract

A glazing closure includes a plurality of clear glass surfaces having a glare-reducing zone formed thereon and extending over at least a portion of said closure, said zone comprising a first low light transmitting and high solar radiation reflecting film on one of said glass surfaces and a second low light transmitting and high solar radiation reflecting film on a corresponding portion of another of said surfaces, said zone being non-iridescent and having a light transmittance of less than 23%. The closure may comprise a single sheet of glass having one coating on each side thereof, two sheets of glass laminated together each sheet having a coating on one of its surfaces, or a laminate comprising two glass sheets with a transparent thermoplastic material interposed therebetween each of the glass sheets being coated on one of its surfaces. The coating may be uniform over the entire surface of the glazing closure or it may be thickest adjacent to one edge thereof and gradually reduce in thickness leaving a clear glass area adjacent to the opposite edge. The first construction is suitable for windows for buildings and the second is particularly suitable for the rear windows of motor cars of the type which extend over the rear seat and replace portions of the roof of the car. The coating may comprise a metal oxide and may be formed by spraying a salt of the metal on to the preheated glass sheet. The oxides which have been found to be effective include cobalt oxide, tin oxide, titanium oxide, iron oxide and/or mixtures thereof. Cobalt oxide is the preferred film. A particularly suitable filming solution comprises a solution of cobalt propionate in water containing some free propionic acid. A solution of this salt in methanol may also be used. Other suitable salts include cobalt 2-ethyl hexanoate, cobalt octate, cobalt acetyl acetonate, and cobalt acetate. Coloured metal oxides such as the oxides of nickel, cadmium and iron or mixtures thereof may be used; a mixture of nickel oxide and manganese oxide is also useful. These coloured metal oxide films may be produced from solutions of the chlorides, acetates or nitrates of the metals. The filming solutions may also contain a wetting agent.
