1359170 Glass laminates GLAVERBEL 21 May 1971 48841/73 Divided out of 1359166 Heading B5N [Also in Division C1] A glass panel comprising a first sheet of glass 2 secured by an intervening organic sheet 3 to a second sheet of glass 1, both sheets 1 and 2 having been chemically tempered, is characterized in that the second sheet 1 can be flexed to impose flexing forces on the first sheet 2 sufficient to break that sheet but the relative inherent strengths of the sheets 2, 1 are such that, if tested independently the resistance of the first sheet 2 to breakage by flexure in a direction such that the flexure imposes tensioning forces on its side 5 which in the panel is remote from the second sheet 1 would be higher than the resistance of the second sheet 1 to breakage by flexure which imposes tensioning forces on the side 6 of the sheet which in the panel faces the first sheet 2. The panel may be flat or curved in one or more planes. Preferably the first sheet 2 is at least 1À25 times the thickness of the first sheet 1. The sheets 1 and 2 may form the external faces of the panel or the faces may be covered by a sheet which is not a strength member or by a coating layer. In addition to chemical tempering, effected in both examples by immersion of sheets 1 and 2 of a soda line glass in a KNO 3 bath, part or all of side 5 of sheet 2 and in some cases also side 4 of sheet 1 may be subjected to a weakening treatment. This may be surface abrasion as by a powder of iron oxide, cerium oxide or alumina or a mixture of two or more thereof or by surface scratches. Such scratches are preferably in one main direction, which in a windscreen, will be in a direction normal to the longitudinal axis of the screen, the scratches having a depth less than 5 microns. The treatment may be before or after the chemical tempering. In addition, a supplementary strengthening treatment of sheet 2 at least locally may be effected after the chemical tempering and before the weakening treatment. The treatment may be chemical dissolution of a surface layer by a medium in liquid or gaseous state, the preferred medium being one containing fluoride ions, such as ammonium fluoride or an aqueous solution containing hydrofluoric acid, plus for example sulphuric acid, which is sprayed on. One or both sheets may be in a state of elastic flexure, which may be by means of the sheets per se or by a frame. The intervening organic sheet is preferably a sheet of polyvinylbutyral or a high molecular weight polycarbonate of a bisphenol and the adhesive used is a polyvinylacrylate.
