Abstract
1321381 Actuation of switches; switch contacts; switch indicators POST OFFICE 2 Dec 1971 [20 Jan 1971] 2750/71 Heading H1N [Also in Division H2] A protective circuit assembly (see Division H2) includes an explosion-operated switch comprising a body 1 of epoxide paper-based material and an electrically-fired detonator 6 which drives a slug 7, normally retained by a lead wire 9, along a groove 5 into a tapered gap 10 between copper polepieces 3 to provide a short-circuit therebetween. The slug 7 and ends of the pieces 3 are preferably silver plated. Expansion chambers 11 relieve pressure in the switch, which is closed by a cover (2, Figs. 1 and 4, not shown) screwed to body 1 and sealed by epoxy resin. A sealed window (14, Fig. 4, not shown) in cover (2) in the vicinity of the gap 10 indicates switch operation by becoming opaque. A desicator 16 removes excess moisture. Should the shortcircuit current melt slug 7, a small well 19 ensures that a circuit is maintained for at least 50 ms. between the ends of polepieces 3.
