Abstract

1321252 Converter vessels; tuyeres UNION CARBIDE CORP 22 July 1970 [15 Aug 1969] 35536/70 Heading F4B A reaction vessel 15 for the decarburization of stainless steel melts 19, by an argon-oxygen gas mixture from tuyeres 32 includes a steel shell 20, a chrome-magnesite brick lining 21 and a cover 24 provided with a pouring spout 27 of key-hole shaped cross-section, in part defined by projecting edge areas 26a, which help prevent molten metal splashes escaping from the vessel. The vessel is mounted through clampable support feet 29 in a tiltable supporting ring (13, Fig. 1, not shown) itself supported by trunnions on a frame having a tilting drive mechanism. Each tuyere 32 comprises embedded in a chrome magnesite refractory shape 22, concentric inner and outer tubes 34, 33 separated by longitudinal spacing ribs (not shown). An external annular rib 36 on the tube 33 and a refractory mortar packing 23 hold the tubes 33, 34 within the refractory shape 22. Argon is supplied via fitting 38 to the tube 33 and an argon-oxygen mixture via fitting 37 to the tube 34.
