Abstract
1321221 Windscreen wipers G M SPENCE 23 June 1970 [7 May 1969] 23187/69 Heading A4F [Also in Divisions G1 and H2] A window wiper or demister for a vehicle window, windscreen or headlamp lens is provided with a moisture detector adapted to provide an electrical signal denoting the moisture content of a sensing region, control means responsive to said signal for operating a wiper or demister mechanism, further control means responsive to the signal to energize an electrical heater for the sensing region, and means responsive to atmospheric temperature for reducing the energization of the heater as the atmospheric temperature falls. The moisture detector 10 comprises a ceramic plate 11 having a one face two inter-digitated electrodes 12, 13, the conductance between which varies in accordance with the moisture between them. For evaporating such moisture a heating resistor 14 is provided in the reverse side of the plate 11. An alternating output from a multi-vibrator 15 is applied to the electrode 12 to provide a voltage about mid-point of a voltage divider 18, 19 dependent upon the moisture between the electrodes 12, 13. This voltage is amplified and rectified and applied to the base of a transistor 26 so that the voltage between its emitter and the negative line 22 represents the moisture between the electrodes 12, 13. When this voltage exceeds a first value a transistor 30 is rendered conducting, and when it exceeds a higher second value a transistor 31 is rendered conducting to energize relay coils 32, 33, respectively, for low and high speed operation of the wiper motor 40. The current through the heater is controlled by circuitry including transistors 49, 50, 52 and 58, and a potential divider including resistors 54, 55 and 56 and a thermistor 57. Wide variation of atmospheric temperature the thermistor 57 alters the output of the potential divider so that the current through the heater 14 falls as the atmospheric temperature rises. A switch 32c is operated by the relay coil 32 to short circuit the resistor 54 to increase the current through the heater 14 when the wiper, mechanism is in operation. Demister mechanism controlled by a moisture detector and similar circuitry is also described.
