Abstract

[Also in Divisions A4 and G1] A windscreen wiping system comprises a moisture detector 21 connected via an amplifier 15, 16 to a switching relay 12, 13 controlling a drive motor 10 for the wiper or wipers, whereby the motor 10 is energized when the windscreen is wet, and a time delay device 17, 18 for maintaining the switching relay energized for a predetermined time after the moisture detector returns to its dry state. The delay device comprises a capacitor 18 which is charged via resistors 22, 23, 17 and the moisture detector 21 when the transistors 15, 16 are rendered conducting by the moisture detector 21, and when the moisture has been removed from the latter the capacitor 18 discharges to maintain the transistors 15, 16 conducting and the motor 10 energized for a desired period. A further moisture detector 37 may be provided which is ineffective during light rain, but during heavy rain causes an amplifier 35, 36 to energize a relay 34 to actuate a switch 11 for operating the motor 10 at a higher speed. The moisture detector 21 may comprise spaced conductive foils 29, 30 (Fig. 2, not shown), arranged on the windscreen with conductive foils arranged therebetween and spaced by air gaps. The two moisture detectors 21, 47 may have a common electrode. Alternatively the moisture detector 21 may comprise a disc 42 (Fig. 5, not shown) rotated by an electric motor controlled by the switch 12 and comprising inter digitated conductive elements spaced by an air gap.
