Abstract

1320961 Copolymer membrane; dialysis CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 22 Oct 1970 [25 Nov 1969] 50333/70 Heading B1X Charged solute particles are separated from a solvent by diffusion through a membrane formed of a copolymer comprising at least 50 mol per cent (preferably over 70 mol per cent) of units each having a hydroxyl group, and also comprising units each having a basic and/or carboxylic acid group. The hydroxyl group units may be derived from ethylene glycol monomethacrylate, ethylene glycol monoacrylate or the acrylates or methacrylates of di-ethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, propylene glycol or mixed condensates of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, or, by saponification, from vinyl acetate. Basic groups may be derived from N, N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, N-N-dimethylamino ethyl acrylate or p-diethylaminostyrene; and carboxylic groups from methacrylic acrylic, itaconic acids or maleic anhydride. The copolymer membrane may be formed by forcing a mixture of the monomers between glass plates between which a polyamide foil or a fabric of strongly oriented poly (ethylene terephthalate) monofilament has been placed, polyethylene foil being used to prevent adhesion to the glass plates. Alternatively, wire gauze, porous alumina or sintered glass may be used to reinforce the membrane. The membranes can be used in reverse osmosis, e.g. for desalination, and in dialysis of blood,
