Abstract

1302619 Graft polymer membranes CONSIGLIO NAZIONALE DELLE RICERCHE 27 Feb 1970 9633/70 Heading C3G [Also in Division B1] Membranes for use in reverse osmosis are produced by contacting a matrix film, having a thickness of 1 to 25 microns, of a polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene or polytetrafluoroethylene with a monomer (a) having functional polar groups or (b) capable of receiving functional polar groups, inducing at least partial graft polymerization of said monomer on to said matrix and, where necessary, further processing the thus formed graft polymer to add functional groups thereto, the resulting membrane containing at least 5 molar per cent of polar groups based upon the grafted monomer, being from 115 to 250% of the weight of the matrix prior to treatment and having a water permeability at least ten times greater than that of the said matrix. In the examples are produced by (1) grafting polytetrafluoroethylene or polyethylene with styrene, or styrene and divinylbenzene, and sulphonating the graft polymer; (2) grafting polytetrafluoroethylene with styrene, chloromethylating the graft polymer and quaternizing it with trimethylamine; (3) grafting polytetrafluoroethylene with acrylic acid or vinyl acetate; (4) grafting polytetrafluoroethylene, polypropylene or nylon with vinyl pyridine and quaternizing it with methyl iodide; (5) grafting nylon with vinyl pyridine and quaternizing it with ethyl bromide, alone or in the presence of alpha, alpha<SP>1</SP>-dibromo-para-ditolylsulphone; (6) grafting nylon with acrylic acid and hexamethylenediamine diacrylamide and (7) grafting nylon 6/11 copolyamide with vinyl pyridine and quaternizing it with ethyl bromide.
