Abstract
1320874 Supply and protective systems for discharge lamps GENERAL ELECTRIC CO Ltd 12 Jan 1972 [13 Jan 1971] 1715/71 Heading H2H An operating circuit for a high pressure sodium discharge lamp 1 comprises an inductor L connected in series with the lamp across a supply 3, 4, the inductor L being protected from the effects of high voltage surges which may occur due to the operation of the starting devices of the lamp by the connection across a portion of the inductor of a voltage sensitive impedance 7, which impedance may comprise a pair of oppositely poled Zener diodes D1, D2 in series with a resistor R or a voltage responsive resistor. The inductor may be provided with a number of of tapping points to allow the circuit to be used with different supply voltages and if the supply voltage is D.C. one Zener diode only may be used. The lamp is normally started by means of a temperature operable switch 2 built into the lamp but should the lamp extinguish an electronic starting device 5 is provided to enable rapid restriking of the lamp to be effected.
