Abstract

1,161,360. Control systems for vapour discharge lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 5 July, 1967 [5 July, 1966], No. 31040/67. Heading H2H. A starting circuit for a discharge lamp such as a high pressure mercury vapour lamp T comprises an inductance L in series with the lamp and a series circuit of a capacitor C2 and a bi-directional voltage breakdown device D connected across the lamp terminals t 1 , the breakdown voltage of the device D being less than the voltage of the source t s . During starting, breakdown of the device causes high voltage pulses to be imposed on the source voltage to cause striking of the lamp T. In another embodiment two devices D connected in series are used with parallel connected voltage dividing resistors. Furthermore, a resistor and a thermally operable switch may be connected in series with the device D and capacitor C2, the thermal switch protecting the capacitor C2 from voltage surges due to an attempted restarting of the lamp too soon after it has been extinguished.
