Abstract

1320867 Jointing electrical connections by stamping BUNKER RAMO CORP 15 Oct 1971 [8 Feb 1971] 48161/71 Heading B3A and B3Q Apparatus for crimping electrical contacts (12), Fig. 2 (not shown), to wires comprises means 20 for supplying the contacts singly to a device 22 for correctly orientating them before they are dropped into a tube 26 which is connected at its lower end to means 28, Fig. 10, for delivering the contacts to the crimping means 31. The apparatus includes a base 40 on which a platform 43 is supported by lugs 41. The platform 43 supports a bowl 20 and a vibrator 49 for shaking contacts along a track 52, 78, Fig. 3, and into a recess 76 in a transfer plate 65 which is mounted on a pivot 67 on an inclined platform 61. A pneumatic or electric single or double-acting actuator 74 turns the plate 65 and transfers the contact to a channel 81 down which it slides, assisted by slight vibration of the platform 61 transmitted, through brackets 54, 56, from the lower platform 43. The depth of the channel 81 reduces so that the contact moves upwardly into a second transfer slot 83 in the plate 65. Return move- ment of the plate rolls the contact along an upwardly inclined surface 85 and into an opening 87 on the platform. The opening has narrow ends, Fig. 5 (not shown), so whichever way round the contact rolls into the slot, the wider, sleeve-end of the contact is uppermost as the contact falls through the slot into a funnel (97), Fig. 8 (not shown), connected to the tube 26. At its lower end the tube 26 enters a yoke 109, Fig. 10 with a passage 112 through which the contact falls into a feed tube 103. An actuator 116 pushes the contact into the crimping device 31 where it is gripped by a rubber ring 139, Fig. 12, at the exit end of the device. The actuator has an end socket 105, Fig. 15, and a retaining spring 122 for engaging the contact. A guide funnel 35 for wire to be inserted in the contact is adjacent the ring 139. The crimping device is operated, through a lever 37, by a cylinder 38, and the apparatus is started by a foot-switch. A selection knob enables travel of the dies to be adjusted for different contacts. Some parts of the feeding arrangement may be formed of a transparent plastics so that progress of the contacts may be observed.
