Abstract
1320859 Knitting-machines NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP 24 Sept 1971 [23 Nov 1970] 44677/71 Heading D1C In an independent needle, circular or flat, knitting machine the needle cams are subjected to high frequency vibration. Thus the needle butts are out of contact with the cams for a substantial period and friction is reduced. In the embodiment shown, cam boxes 16 are fixed to a spider frame 20, each arm of which is in contact with an electro-mechanical transducer 46. The boxes are arranged at the positions of maximum displacement and are vibrated vertically, i.e. in a plane normal to the horizontal, radial needle axis. In alternative embodiments each cam box, or pair of boxes is vibrated by a transducer. In a further embodiment the cam box ring is vibrated in a horizontal plane, i.e. normal to the vertical, radial plane containing the butt faces. The transducers which may be piezoelectric or magnetostrictive operate in the range 10-100 thousand c.p.s. The arrangement permits cam angles of 45 or steeper; and cylinder speeds of 600 r.p.m.
