Abstract
1320850 Removing SO 2 from gases CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORP 28 May 1971 18032/71 Heading C1A SO 2 is removed from waste gas by scrubbing the gas with aqueous Na 2 SO 3 , regenerating part of the resulting NaHSO 3 solution with Na 2 CO 3 and recycling it, adding solid CaCO 3 and/or MgCO 3 to the remainder to precipitate CaSO 3 / MgSO 3 and recycling the Na 2 CO 3 so formed, and heating the precipitate to form CaO/MgO. The waste gas may be flue gas or H 2 SO 4 off-gas. Scrubbing may be effected at 50-90‹ C. If the gas contains SO 3 , sulphates are also formed. Entrained fly ash may be separated before or after division of the NaHSO 3 stream. The carbonate may be added as dolomite, limestone, dolomitic limestone, or magnesite. The sulphite precipitate may be (a) heated with coal or coke to give sulphur vapour which may be condensed or scrubbed with solvent, or (b) calcined at 400-1200‹ C. to give SO 2 gas which may be fed to an H 2 SO 4 plant, cooled to liquid SO 2 , or reacted with CO to give S vapour. The Na 2 CO 3 solution may be evaporated to a slurry or solid before recycling. The oxide product may be hydrated.
