A SO2 recovery procedure for separating SO2 from gases, comprising: A. Separation of entrained solids from said gases, B. Cooling of said gases to an optimal temperature, C. Absorption of gaseous SO2 from said cooled gases in a solution containing magnesium to produce magnesium sulfite and magnesium bisulfite, D. Precipitation of hydrated magnesium sulphite crystals from said solution, exceeding the saturation limit of said solution, E. Separation of said crystals from said solution and recycling of the magnesium-containing solution to said absorption stage of gaseous SO2, F. Thermal decomposition of said magnesium sulfite crystals to produce reactive particles of magnesium oxide and a gas containing sulfur dioxide, separating the magnesium oxide particles from the gas containing sulfur dioxide, G. Conversion of the gaseous product containing SO2 into a preferred form, H. and return of at least part of the MgO particles to stage C for the preparation of the solution used in the SO2 gas absorption stage.
