Abstract

1320529 Removing metal by fusion ARCAIR CO 21 Sept 1970 44814/70 Heading B3V [Also in Division H5] In a method of removing metal from a workpiece 16 by an are electrode wherein the molten metal is blown from beneath the arc by a stream of high pressure air directed along an electrode face so as to pass beneath the end of the electrode, the electrode 10 is of substantially rectangular cross-section having a width w at least three times its thickness t and is inclined to the workpiece surface whilst it is moved across the workpiece surface with its lower transverse edge perpendicular to the line of movement 23. The edge surfaces 13, 14 of the carbon electrode may be flat or slightly convex. The line of movement 23 of the electrode is in the same vertical plane as the axis of the inclined electrode as shown in Fig. 2, or alternatively the electrode may be rotated so that the lower edge formed is inclined to the axis of the electrode. In another embodiment, (Fig. 3, not shown), an edge of a billet is radiused by inclining the electrode with the edge of the billet and moving the electrode along the edge.
