Abstract
1320255 Activated carbon particles STANDARD OIL CO 6 Sept 1971 [23 Nov 1970] 41356/71 Heading C1A Active carbon particles are made by (a) mixing particulate carbon material with a petroleum acid sludge, (b) hardening product (a) by heattreatment, (c) deoidifying product (b) by heattreatment, (d) carbonizing product (c) and removing volatile products of carbonization from the vicinity of the carbon product as quickly as they are formed, and (e) activating the particulate product of (d) by known techniques. The petroleum acid sludge may be any residue obtained by treating petroleum stock in the manufacture of mineral oils or by reacting relatively concentrated sulphuric acid with an industrial fuel oil. The exemplified carbon material is bituminous coking coal powder. The removal of the volatile carbonization products may be accomplished by (i) spreading the product of (c) in a thin layer on a tray and effecting carbonization in a circulating air oven with efficient circulation or (ii) in a multiple hearth furnace equipped with an exhaust port in each hearth area. A suitable furnace 1, for carbonization and activation as shown, consists of several hearth areas 2, heated separately and each equipped with a rotatable rake-like rabble arm 5, connected to a drive shaft 6 which is rotated by drive 7 and gear means 8. The particulate material is fed to the furnace from hopper 3, via valve 4, and is rotated by rabble arm 5 in each hearth area and swept through openings 9 progressive down the furnace and finally leaves the furnace at 10, and is collected in hopper 11. In the upper area of the furnace, each hearth is provided with a series of vents 12, for independent removal of the volatiles. The vents may each be equipped with damper controls for preventing back-draught and the volatiles leave the furnace by common stack 13.
