Abstract

1319952 Training vehicle drivers R R STEPHENS 24 June 1970 [10 April 1969] 18415/69 Heading B7H In a visual vehicle simulator a projector 25 projects an image of a road surface on a screen 21 via the reflective surface of a rotating drum 26, thus giving the impression of the road surface moving towards the operator. The screen 21 forms part of a box 20 pivotally mounted at 30 and which is moved transversely by means of a cam actuated arm 33. A rod 40 below the screen indicates the direction of the vehicle relative to the road image, the rod being pivotally mounted at 41 on the screen and connected to a wire loop 42 which passes over a pulley 44 on the steering column 45. The drum 26 is driven by a motor 50 and gear box 52, and its rotational speed may be varied in response to the accelerator, clutch or brake pedals or during gear change by actuation of resistance circuits in the motor. Alternatively (Fig. 4, not shown) the motor may be arranged so that it is disconnected from the drum during braking and clutch operation. In other embodiments various forms of drums may be used and the transverse movement of the road surface image may be effected by moving the projector or the side walls 22, 23 on either side of the screen 21. The road surface image may alternatively be given by a band or strip of translucent or partly transparent material passing through the projector gate, or by a rotating translucent tube at the gate.
