1319645 Welding by fusion; cutting by fusion L'AIR LIQUIDE SA POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE 20 July 1970 35139/70 Headings B3R and B3V A welding or cutting arc torch comprises a non-consumable welding or cutting electrode 12 and, insulated therefrom, two or more auxialiary electrodes 18, 20 intended for high-frequency arc initiation. As shown, a gas-shielded arc welding or cutting torch includes a refractory nozzle 16, a non-consumable welding or cutting electrode 12 and a pair of auxiliary electrodes 18, 20 for the purpose of striking the arc. In use the electrodes 18, 20 are connected via screened leads 24, 26 to an HF generator 28. The main electrode 12 is connected to a welding or cutting current generator 6 across whose terminals a resistor 31 and/or capacitor 30 may be connected if desired. Generator 6 may provide A.C. or D.C. welding or cutting current. Electrodes 18, 20 are insulated from nozzle 16. The position of main electrode 12 can be adjusted. Argon gas may pass through the nozzle. Electrodes 18, 20 may be of tungsten, thoriated tungsten or stainless steel. In modifications (not shown), more than two auxiliary electrodes are provided; the nozzle can comprise a coating of a refractory insulating material; and the HF generator produces a polyphase current.
