Abstract

1319269 Automatic circuit breakers; vacuum switches GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 9 Oct 1970 [9 Oct 1969] 48087/70 Heading H1N A circuit breaker comprises electromagnetic means arranged to exert a closing force on the movable contact during closing but rendered ineffective during opening. The invention is described as applied to a vacuum switch having a fixed contact 11 and moving contact 12. The latter is closed by rotating a cam 50 bearing against a roller 52 to straighten the toggle 32, 34, thereby raising the rod 21 and closing the contacts through a lost-motion, prestressed spring assembly 22. Current is led to the moving contact through a flexible braid conductor 68 attached to pivoted links 74, 75 and set in a U-shaped configuration so as to exert a straightening thrust on the links and thus tend to close the contacts 11, 12 immediately they make contact. The switch is tripped by disengaging a pivoted latch 42 from a knee pivot 38 so that the linkage 32, 34, 39 collapses and the contacts are opened by opening spring 19. During the initial part of this opening movement the contacts 11, 12 are held closed by spring 26, while the rod 21 is moved downwards by the spring 19, and during this time a roller 90 rocks a latch 83 counter-clockwise so that the arm 80 is no longer supported and the sideways thrust of the conductor 68 on the links 74, 75 can no longer exert an upward thrust on the contact 12. Subsequently the latch 42 is returned to its latched position by spring 42a and latch 83 is restored during the initial part of the next closing movement of the rod 21.
