Abstract

1319171 Sleeves for yarn carriers SONOCO PRODUCTS CO 19 April 1971 [22 June 1970] 24747/71 Heading B8M A sleeve 10 for utilization on the surface of a yarn carrier 30 comprises a single ply blank of plastics material having a predetermined surface contour one longitudinal edge being coated with adhesive to overly the opposite edge when the sleeve is applied to the carrier as an interference fit. In a preferred embodiment the adhesive may incorporate an electrically conductive material whereby static electricity is reduced. Alternatively electrically conductive elements may be embedded in the material of the sleeve 10. In a preferred embodiment, the yarn carrier 30 is a cone and the sleeve is formed to have the same taper as the cone. The sleeve, yarn carrier and insert 36 may be colour coded to identify yarn and surface characteristics of the sleeve. The sleeve is held on the carrier by the tension in the yarn. The yarn carrier surface may be roughened, grooved either longitudinally or circumferentially to prevent the sleeve slipping on the carrier. The sleeve may be provided with various surface characteristics according to its use, e.g. controlled absorption of oils or flocked surface. The yarn carrier is conventional and may be of paper, metal, wood or plastics material. The sleeves permit yarn carriers with damaged surfaces to be reused.
