Abstract
1319061 Piles and pile driving BOLT ASSOCIATES Inc 25 June 1970 [25 June 1969] 30987/70 Heading E1H [Also in Division B3] A hollow pile 12' is driven by alternating pressure pulses transmitted to a shoe 46 through a liquid such as water, and blows on a sleeve 48 from a piston 14. The pulses are generated and the piston is raised by compressed gas e.g. air, emitted periodically from an electrically-operated impulse generator 16, to which the gas is fed through a line 28. The liquid enters the pile through a hose 32 and a conduit in the piston controlled by a non-return valve 68. A clearance space 51 allows the spent gas to escape. The shoe and sleeve may be either fixed to the pile, as shown, or movable axially within limits relative to the pile, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown). Alternatively, the shoe and sleeve are fixed to the pile and the piston, respectively. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7, the piston 84 has an annular shroud attached by a flange 86, which strikes the pile when the piston descends. Spent gas escapes through a clearance gap 89 and an optional vent 78'. A detachable collar may be provided in place of the flange and shroud, Fig. 8 (not shown). When being driven into subaqueous ground to provide a support for a drilling platform the pile may be guided by a tube in a floating platform, Fig. 1 (not shown). The pile may be filled with concrete subsequent to the driving operation and removal of the piston and liquid.
