Abstract
1452777 Pile drivers BOLT ASSOCIATES Inc 28 Nov 1973 [28 Nov 1972] 55270/73 Heading B3H [Also in Division E1] A gas discharge powered pile driver comprises an airgun 16 which discharges high pressure gas into a chamber 30 defined by a cylindrical wall 28 whose lower end is closed by an impulse transmitting block 52. The airgun 16 and the wall 28 are mounted on the lower end of a massive weight 12 slidably mounted in a cylindrical housing 14. The block 52 is fixed to the lower end of the housing and mountable on a pile 15. In operation the chamber 30 is filled with water supplied through a bore 74 in the weight. The airgun discharge into the water causes a force to be transmitted through the block 52 to the pile and causes the weight 12 and associated airgun 16 and wall 28 to raise. The block 52 has a tubular extension 56 around the wall 28 and the chamber 30 increases in volume but remains sealed until the lower end of the wall reaches a tapered region 58 of the extension 56. The pressure is then released through the gap 138, Fig. 5, and the weight descends. The wall 28 impacts with a groove 130 on the block 52 to cause a second force on the pile. Thus the pile is driven twice for each discharge of the airgun. The groove 130 fills with water to provide a cushion for the impact. The airgun recycles automatically or is fired manually. The airgun may operate with compressed air, steam or gaseous combustion products. The pile driver is particularly suited for underwater operation and is suspended from a crane by a chain 68, Fig. 7. The water, air and electric supply to the airgun 16 and chamber 30 is provided by pipes and wires 18A, 70A, 104 connected to an extension tube 80 of the weight bore 74. The wires and pipes have an accumulation loop to permit the weight movement. Alternatively the extension tube 80 is telescoped in a water sleeve (80A), Fig. 10 (not shown), at the top of the housing 14. The pile driver can be used inside a hollow pile (15), Fig. 12 (not shown), underwater. The driver engages a shoulder (188) welded inside the pile.
