Abstract

1318724 Complex metal oxides ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 17 Aug 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 39499/70 Heading C1A Complex metal oxides having a surface are a of at least 5 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. (e.g. 5-300 m.<SP>2</SP>/g.) are prepared by impregnating a first oxide AOx, of surface area at least 5 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. and in which A is Mg, Cu, Sr, Zn, Cd, Mn, Co, Ni, Al, Cr, Fe, Co, Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, Mo, W, Mn, Si, Ce, V, Nb, Ta, Mo or W and x = 1 to 3, with a solution of a salt of a metal or a salt containing a metal, the second metal of said salt being from Groups Ia, Ib, IIa, IIb, IIIa, IIIb, IVb, Vb, VIb, VIIb or VIII of the specified Periodic Table, the salt being thermally or thermally and chemically convertible to a second oxide which is an oxide of the metal component of said salt and which is capable of forming a complex metal oxide by reaction with the first oxide, heating the impregnated mixture under conversion conditions to convert said salt to said second oxide, causing said second oxide to react with said first metal oxide to form a complex metal oxide in the presence of an atmosphere which is inert to reactants and products and recovering a substantially pure complex metal oxide of surface area at least 5 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. by treating the reaction product to remove unreacted first oxide. Specified complex oxides are Mg 2 Mo 3 O 8 , Zn 2 Mo 3 O 8 , Cd 2 Mo 3 O 8 , Mn 2 Mo 3 O 8 , Co 2 Mo 3 O 8 , Ni 2 Mo 3 O 8 , CaMoO 3 , SrMoO 3 , BaMoO 3 , BaMnO 3 , BaCoO 2À85 , BaNiO 2À5 , BaFeO 3 , BaTiO 3 , MgAl 2 O 4 and CaWO 4 .
