Abstract

1,182,651. Polymerisation catalysts. MONSANTO CO. 4 April, 1967 [4 April, 1966; 6 March, 1967 (4)], No. 15492/67. Heading B1E. [Also in Divisions C2, C3 and C7] A polymerisation catalyst is prepared by forming a mixture of (1) a compound having the general formula Xn MCR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>-(-M X( n-1 ) CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>) p MX n in which each of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> taken together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a vinylidene group in which one or both of the hydrogen atoms may be replaced by hydrocarbon groups, M is boron or a metal from Group II, IIIA or IVA of the Periodic Table according to Deming, each X is a halogen atom, n is an integer which is one less than the valency of M and p is zero or an integer, and (2) a compound of a transition metal from Groups IB, IIIB to VIIB or VIII, or a complex containing such a compound R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> preferably have not more than 8 carbon atoms. Metal compounds (2) are preferably used in the highest oxidation state of the metal. Preferred salts under (2) are the halides; mixed halides and cyclopentadienyl compounds are also very suitable. An especially preferred class of titanium compounds are (R<SP>4</SP>Z) m TiX<SP>1</SP>( 4-m ) in which R<SP>4</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group m is an integer from 1 to 4, Z is an oxygen, sulphur, selenium or tellurium atom or an -NR<SP>4</SP>- group. Another useful class of compounds under (2) are (R<SP>4</SP>) 3 QTiX 4 <SP>1</SP> in which Q is a N, P, As, Sb or Bi atom or a monoxide or monosulphide of P, As or Sb. Acetyl acetonate compounds of V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, Ti, Zr, or Mo are also useful. The catalyst may be prepared by electrolysing a compound CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>X 2 using (a) an anode formed from boron or a metal from Groups II, IIIA or IVA and (b) an anode formed from a transition metal from Groups defined above or an anode of an alloy of an element under (a) with a transition metal under (b). The electrolyte is preferably X n MOR<SP>3</SP> where R<SP>3</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an organic group and it is preferably carried out in the presence of an inert gas or ethylene. The catalyst may also be prepared by heating under substantially anhydrous conditions a halide CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>X 3 with an alloy of (1) boron or a metal from Groups II, IIIA or IVA with (2) a transition metal from Groups IB, IIIB to VIIB or VIII.
