Abstract

1318511 Chemiluminescence E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 16 Sept 1965 [16 Sept 1964 11 June 1965] 39560/65 Heading C4S [Also in Division C3] An oxyluminescent article, for example, a panel or tube, comprises an enclosure formed of a synthetic plastics material and containing a porous substrate impregnated with a tetrakis- (disubstituted-amino) ethylene oxyluminescent material, said enclosure being provided with means for admitting air in controllable amounts and having at least one area which permits the passage of light. The porous material may be inserted in the enclosure and then impregnated under oxygen-free conditions with the oxyluminescent material mixed with a carrier, e.g. a liquid hydrocarbon; thickening agents, to control viscosity, and dyes or pigments may also be added to the mixture. An open mesh spacing material may be interposed between the substrate and the enclosure, and reflecting means provided, for example an aluminium foil on one face of the panel. In examples, panel envelopes are made of polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate with or without an inner layer of polyethylene, or oriented polyvinyl fluoride; tubular envelope material is polyvinyl alcohol, polypropylene, nylon, tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer, and ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymer coated with (a) tetraisopropyl titanate, (b) a terpolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, and maleic anhydride, and (c) a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride; the substrate is made of foamed polystyrene, foamed polyurethane, glass fibre mat, cloth, or paper, kraft paper, non- woven polyethylene terephthalate fibre fabric, polypropylene felt, or alkali cellulose, others being instanced; the oxyluminescent material is tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene or 1,1<SP>1</SP>,3,3<SP>1</SP>- tetraethyl - #<SP>2.21 </SP>- bi - (imidazolidine), other specific examples being given; the carrier is mineral oil or a mixture of decane with adiponitrile and polyisobutylene; and the spacing material is glass fibre or polypropylene or nylon netting. Lists of many other suitable materials are given. Alkali cellulose porous substrates enhance luminescence and reduce discoloration as in Ex. XV for instance. Pressurized containers filled with the oxyluminescent composition, with air or oxygen, or with a lightquenching agent, examples being given, may be fitted for discharge into the article when desired. The articles are useful in rescue operations on land or sea and for emergency lighting in aircraft. Methods of preparing articles are disclosed and the articles may be stored in atmospheres to prevent oxygen ingress.
