Abstract
1318226 Tufting SHORELL Ltd 9 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970] 62092/70 Headings DIG and D1K In a tufting machine a stop 20 cooperates with a needle 1 to locate the tuft in the backing fabric 9. The stop 20 may be a stationary plate but as shown separate stops 20 corresponding to the needles 1 are reciprocated by an eccentric 17 on the shaft 7 which reciprocates the needle bar 2 through a second eccentric 6. Separate pattern controlled electrically operated tuft measuring and cutting devices 32, 34 are associated with the branch pipes 29..31 of a compressed air feed-pipe 28 leading to the needle entry orifice 27. When a needle is retracted the appropriate device 32, 34, is operated to feed the desired coloured tuft into the needle which then pierces the fabric 9. A ram 14 descends with the needle to locate the upper end of the tuft and the stop rises to locate the lower end of the tuft, the ram 14 and stop 19 remaining stationary until the needle has retracted above the fabric and the tuft is gripped by the fabric. The backing ends of the tufts are sprayed with adhesive 38 which is dried by a heater 51. The fabric 9 is advanced intermittently by a ratchet driven take-up roll 13, the fabric being stationary while the needles pierce it.. The needle is reciprocated by an angularly adjustable eccentric 42, Fig. 2, which is connected to the needle operating lever 47 by a strap 44 adjustable in a slot 46, whereby the stroke and timing of the needle may be varied. A modified stop, Fig. 5, comprises a horseshoe shaped member 50, on a block 19, which permits the tuft to be slid sideways out of the stop when the fabric moves forward.
