Abstract
1318200 Mass spectrometers ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Nov 1970 [7 Nov 1969] 54646/69 Heading H1D The effective width of an opening traversed by the ion beam of a mass spectrometer is varied by a zoom lens system 7 comprising two ion lenses 8 and 9. Lens 8 comprises three apertured metal plates 15, 16, and 17 secured by bolts 20 to support members. The middle plate 16 is connected to a spring contact 50 engaged by the conductor 34 of a high voltage cable 32, and is insulated from the outer plates 15 and 17 which are earthed. Lens 9 is similarly constructed and connected. The system 7 is contained in a metal housing 13 secured by vacuum seals between the slit 5<SP>1</SP> of an ion source assembly 1<SP>1</SP> and a coupling unit 14 which is connected to an electrostatic analyser of a spectrometer (Fig. 1, not shown), in which a second zoom lens system is disposed between a magnetic analyser and a slit associated with an ion collector. A circuit is described (Fig. 6, not shown) in which voltages are applied to the high voltage plates of the lenses by a system of potentiometers in dependence on the ion source potential. Magnification of the lens systems is changed by moving the tapping points of the potentiometers.
