Abstract

1317996 Making diaphragms; tensioning; welding by fusion COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIEATOMIQUE 26 May 1971 [26May 1970] 17112/71 Headings B3A B3E and B3R [Also in Division G1] A flat taut diaphragm is made by securing a circular metal sheet 1 to an annular support 2, melting the sheet 1 along a circular line 10 having a diameter slightly less than the inner diameter of the support 2, e.g. 2 mm. less, and rapidly cooling the molten metal to produce a circular bead (16) (Fig. 2, not shown) and a tensional stress in the sheet 1 enclosed by the circular line 10. In one embodiment, a sheet 1, e.g. of corrosion resistant steel having a thickness of 0À1 mm., support 2 and a ring 4 are joined together by welds 38 and the line 10 melted by electron bombardment. The melting and cooling steps may be repeated two or three times. In another embodiment (Fig 2, not shown), the ring 4 is omitted. The diaphragm, e.g. a pressure pick up or mirror diaphragm, may have a vibration frequency of 3,000 Hz.
