Abstract
1317769 Preparation of benzoate esters DOW CHEMICAL CO 4 Aug 1970 [4 Aug 1969] 37645/70 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of benzoate esters by the reaction of a benzoic acid or a benzoic acid having no more than three inert substituents, i.e. C 1-10 alkyl, C 1-10 alkoxy and CF 3 with an alcohol which is an alkylene or polyalkylene glycol or an aliphatic monoether of said glycol of up to 10 carbon atoms, a glycol monoaryl ether of up to 14 carbon atoms, a polyol having at least three -OH groups of up to 10 carbon atoms or an alkanol, aralkanol or alkenol of 4 to 20 carbon atoms, at 180‹ to 350‹ C. in the absence of air or oxygen and under conditions minimizing contact of the resulting ester and water comprises utilizing at least 1À1 moles of the acid for each hydroxyl equivalent and carrying out the reaction in the absence of a catalyst. The examples describe the preparation of benzoate esters by the reaction of benzoic acid with glycerol, 2- phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol and dipropylene glycol.
