Abstract

1317721 Gas burners; condensers NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 10 June 1970 [13 March 1969] 13340/69 Headings F4S and F4T [Also in Divisions G1 and G2] A flame photometer has a gas burner system comprising a gas burner 19, arranged to be supplied with a mixture of air and combustible gas from a vaporizing chamber 12, the chamber having a gas inlet, e.g. a ring of jets, 16 and an atomizer 11 through which air is fed and entrains a sample solution to be examined, the system being characterized by the vaporising chamber 12 having heating means 18. The means 18 is preferably an electric heating element, the thermal output of which may be controlled by a rheostat. Preheated air flows through the atomizer and emerges at an orifice 22, entraining the sample solution from a capillary 23 which is cooled by a water jacket 24 to prevent evaporation of the sample solvent. The air and sample mix with the gas in the chamber 12 and the mixture then passes through a condenser 13, having a fluted inner wall 30 and a circuit catchment gutter 31 with a drain tube 32, to remove excess water vapour from the mixture. In an alternative embodiment a further condenser may be placed between the condenser 13 and burner 19. Also a second gas ring may be positioned between the two condensers for the entry of additional fuel or oxidant gas.
