Abstract
1317106 Condensing formaldehyde with aldehydes or ketones INSTITUT ORGANICHESKOl KHIMII AKADEMII NAUK KIRGIZSKOI SSR 18 March 1971 7246/71 Heading C2C #-Hydroxy-aldehydes or #-keto-alcohols are prepared by condensing a C 2-6 aliphatic aldehyde, a C 3-6 aliphatic ketone or a C 3-6 alicyclic ketone, said starting aldehydes and ketones having a hydrogen atom on an α-carbon atom, with HCHO in the presence of kaolin calcined at 500-700‹ C. and of a tertiary amine of boiling point lower than that of the product. Examples prepare 2,2,2 - trihydroxymethylethanal from acetaldehyde, 2,2-dihydroxymethylpropanal from propanal, 2,2-dihydroxymethylbutanal from butanal, 3-hydroxymethylbutanone-2 from methyl ethyl ketone and 2- hydroxymethylcyclohexanone from cyclohexanone.
