Abstract

1,168,216. Aliphatic alcohols. VYSKUMNY USTAV PRE PETROCHEMIU. 8 April, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 16772/68. Heading C2C. By-products resulting from the preparation of a polymethylol alkane by a Cannizaro reaction of an aldehyde in an alkaline medium are processed by subjecting the by-products to fission hydrogenation in the presence of a catalyst containing one or more elements of Groups I B , II B , V IB and VIIIB of the Mendeleev Periodic Table, at a pressure of from 1 to 450 atmospheres and a temperature of from 25‹ to 460‹ C., and where the hydrogenation is discontinuous for a reaction period of up to 6 hrs. or where the hydrogenation is continuous with a volume feed rate of 0.05 to 5 per hour. The products are aliphatic alcohols not having more than the same number of carbon atoms as the polymethylol alkane.
